Charlap Hyman & Herrero won Miami Design District’s annual competition to design holiday decorations for the neighborhood. In an installation that visually enveloped the entire district, CHH crafted a silver tinsel-like fringe to wrap the trunks and branches of over 300 trees. Though only a temporary decorative treatment, the project required engineering, environmental and design considerations as well as coordination with local authorities, fabricators, and large-scale contractors. Reflecting light both day and night and consuming the tropical plants with silver, the tinsel material lent a snowy effect to the Miami neighborhood. The installation was appropriately named White Rain after the first recorded instance of snow in Florida’s history, in which locals had no other words to describe the phenomenon before them.
